Safes - European Standards

Security Safes are tested and rated in accordance with pan European standard, EN114301. Safes that have been successfully tested are given a rating from 0 – 6 according to strength. Please see attached table for suggested maximum overnight cash limits for tested and graded safes. These limits are frequently multiplied by a factor of up to 10 times for jewellery risks in domestic premises, however all limits are recommendations only and insurers may give more or less indemnity depending on a number of variables.

Decreasing Variables

  • The policyholder’s previous claims record
  • The location of the policyholder’s premises
  • Forcing or cutting tools are available on site (workshops, garages, etc)
  • Whether the premises are alarmed.

Increasing Variables

  • The majority of the safe’s contents are valuables rather than cash
  • The premises are domestic rather than commercial
  • The Safe is alarmed or within an alarmed area.

Notes:

  1. It is advisable for all safes to be bolted to the floor to prevent removal. Insurers are likely to insist that safes weighing less than 1 ton (1,088 kg) are based fixed.
  2. The table figures should be used as a guide only. It is the customer’s responsibility to confirm indemnity limits with insurers before the safe is installed.
  3. When choosing a safe, estimate the likely maximum value of the contents allowing for future increases. If the indemnified limit is exceeded, the insurer may refuse to accept liability for the excess and could impose a penalty.
  4. In order to obtain full cover, Euro rated underfloor safes must be fitted by a qualified installer in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.
  5. Safe suppliers cannot give opinions concerning floor loadings. Customers must obtain advice from an architect or structural engineer.
